Help I have sick chickens
« on: May 15, 2011, 20:52 »
I keep 8 chickens (7 hens - a mix of browns, pekins and orpingtons together with a pekin cockerel). They are very clean regularly wormed and healthy. On Friday I was given 3 white silkies who, on looking closely on Saturday 2 of them do not look well at all. Their eyes are closed and they look scruffy on their top feathres.
I have given them fresh water and feed and  they tucked in but still no sign of them opening their eyes.
I am worried they will infect my other hens as they are all in the house together.
Can someone help please
T

new hens should always be kept in quarantine for the first couple of weeks just in case they are carrying any infection, however in your case I realise this advice comes too late. Are their eyes bubbly and do they have a rattly chest?
Have you tried bathing their eyes with cooled boiled water?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Could it be that they have been duffed up and are now looking and feeling sad and dejected.... but possibly not actually ill, though respiratory disease is only a stress beat away :(
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

can you separate them just to make sure they are not being bullied?
