Title: Talking Turkey
Post by: ANHBUC on December 19, 2012, 23:27
Nearly Christmas and despite having 2 turkey poults I have been weighing up my options for Christmas dinner!  Bootsy and Snudge will be celebrating the fact that they will be too small at Christmas.     Hubby still wants turkey so I will have to bite the bullet and buy a turkey crown.

Like you say, your 2 pullets won't be disappointed by their lack of weight gain. I am sure I have heard that there has been a large increase in the number of turkeys attending Slimmers World classes this winter!

Unfortunately I haven't got what it takes to rear & dispatch my own birds for eating but I can imagine it is quite galling that they aren't ready in time.

Oh dear, that's a bit off isn't it.  A turkey crown is a good option for 2 though.  Otherwise you end up eating it forever afterwards  :)

So what you buying the terrible twosome for their Christmas dinner then   Must all that dancing about they do - burns the calories you know

They're too beautiful to eat!

and the meat is often dry, so why not go for something different?  Duck and goose are nice

I'm in a competition to guess what my sister is providing for us this year - been through duck, etc, guinea pig, wild boar, porcupine, squirrel and still not guessed..... what shall I try tomorrow?

I knew they probably wouldn't be ready in time and I didn't want to cut their lives even shorter.  They definately have been doing aerobic exercising which they love.  Just putting them on to finishers pellets so they should start to bulk up nicely.

It has to be turkey this year as hubby is looking forward to turkey, stuffing and cranberry butties while he is off work!   :D

Is snake edible?  ;)

Hope you get your turkey AN....

(We don't have it for family reasons, so it's always a suprise what we get!)

I reckon it's a tin of corned beef with feathers Sellotaped to the sides!

I fact, I'm absolutely sure I'm right, and claim a big snog under the mistletoe!

Claims, to 'Growster, Hawkhurst Police Station, Hawkhurst,  Somerset'?

Ho ho ho! We'll see Growster!
This is supposed to be ANHBUC's thread about her poor specimen turkeys... whereas we'll be eating a turkey in the US sense of a disaster, methinks...

Have you got a bird yet, AN ?

I don't mind the thread taking a few turns here and there, it is chat after all.   :D

Yes I have managed to get a turkey crown.

Bootsy and Snudge are merrily tucking into their finishers pellet not knowing the quicker they fatten up ............ well you know what I mean.

Ignorance really is bliss in this case I think

At least when they do go, you will have the satisfaction of knowing they had a good life in your garden :)

To put you all at rest with your guessing:  my sister served us with.......drum roll.......

It was like beef and delicious.  We never guessed... so, sorry, Growster - no snog under the mistletoe this year

I would have happily swapped for the turkey crown was stringy.   :(  Never had that before, the rest of the meal was delicious even if I do say so myself.  Fingers crossed Bootsy and Snudge are better than the turkey crown.

Don' t worry, booties and smudge will taste like heaven after you commercial bird.  Make sure you pull the Windows out of the . legs when you process your 2.  The dark meat will taste much better.  It is something most of the commercials don't bother with as its easier to just chop the feet off!

I've never heard of this. What exactly are these Windows?

Oh goodness.  I did it on my kindle last night and didn't notice it had put its own word in!

What a wally I am not to read through it!

Yes, meant sinews!  Before Brian had his sinew puller, he used a rake which he attached to the wall and jammed the foot in the rake tines and pulled the foot off and the sinews come out too.  Just cut around the ankle joint first to break the skin.

Surprising what a difference it makes.

Sorry again for auto correction thingy on kindle!   :( :( :(

  That's technology for you.  Will have a go at that, managed it with young cockerels but it will be tougher with turkeys no doubt.
