Compost heap warming up.
« on: August 09, 2020, 10:24 »
Good morning everyone,  after a large influx of green material (tomato prunings etc) the compost heap is warmish.  What do the worms do then, do they migrate to a cooler portion of the heap, where do they go?

Cheers,  Tony. :)
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

They will move down into the cooler depths or into the soil underneath it.

I find bigger worms move in on my plot heaps.  We have slow worms living around the edges of the site and they love to bask under the covers of the summer compost heaps.  I often find whole gangs of them sleepy and blissed out in their compost heap sauna  :)

On the subject of compost heaps, does an accelerator actually work?

I know there are 'alternatives', but it's a long way from the bathroom...

Hello the worms will just go down into the next layer but come back up to feed ,make sure that the tomatoe leaves haven't got blight or any other  disease  as the compost heap will need to be very hot to kill  them ,compost accelerators do work if you've ever used Garotta it smells like wet nappies so saves a walk with the pot   jezza
