Drying herbs
« on: June 02, 2020, 20:22 »
Hi
I have some instructions to dry herbs by hanging them
They tell me to tie them in small bunches, to avoid rot or mould.
Hang upside down.
Wrap bundles in muslin or paper bags with holes
When bundles are dry remove bags

Can I ask do I put in bags as soon as I hang or later when they have dried a bit
Thanks
J

I have found the following works for me -

Pick herbs & strip leaves from the stems
Place leaves on a piece of kitchen towel, spaced out
Then blast in the microwave for three  minutes on high
Fold over the kitchen towel, & keep folding over until all leaves reduced
Makes a nice crackling sound   :nowink:

Air drying requires air so I wouldn’t tie them and then bag them.

I tend to leave them loose in a baking tray or plastic pot on a sunny window sill for a month and then strip and put them in a jar.

I have a dehydrator but find any kind of heat changes the flavour of most herbs.
