Apple tree pruning problems
« on: February 25, 2013, 15:36 »
Last year my wife got an idiot to work on our garden.
He severely pruned (half the main branch of the jupiter) a triple tree jupiter/jester
/fiesta and cut another branch of a d'arcy spice.

Will I still get apples this year do you think?  BTW if  you ever have the opportunity to have someone with Spanish gardening qualifications on your garden just say no.
The ones they get unemployed people to do there don't seem to be very good.

Assuming the varieties are spur-fruiting (i.e. off little stubby bits on each branch) and not tip-bearing (i.e. at the end), they should still fruit this year if there are still spurs there.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You can check out if there are fruiting buds... they are the fatter roundy ones. The pointy ones hugging close to the branches are leaf buds

As Yorkie said, hopefully you will get some flowers this Spring

We asked the moron to remove some bramble not to cut the apple tree.
If I had known he were going to do this I would never have let him in the house.

The worst that's going to happen is a reduced crop this year. You might have some extra pruning work to do to keep the family tree balanced though.

Well I just had a look in the garden the D' Arcy spice has no apples.  The family tree despite being fed this year has a lot less than last  year.  Compared to the cordons at the back - the moron didn't go there and trees in pots, the crop doesn't look very good.
Am I right in thinking that the reduced crop is probably due to the pruning.
