What's happened to my fennel?  It started out ok, then just got longer.  Any suggestions appreciated.

It has bolted (gone [0r run]  to seed).  With fennel this may happen if it runs short of water - and they do need a lot.

I don't normally sow mine until after midsummer or it will bolt.  There are some varieties that don't, but they are the exception.  I sowed mine yesterday.

Ah, thank you.  Looks like I planted too early!   Still tasted good in tonight's risotto!

Yes it does taste lovely but the stalk will be woody as it's run to see but you can just hoik it out as you've got the flavour      I make sowings at intervals.  From several sowings this year I have still only got about four viable looking plants    I have got fresh seed though and will be making a sowing of Mantovano once this heatwave has passed
