Green Peppers
« on: August 29, 2010, 16:47 »
Hi All,

I've got a handful of pepper plants that have varying sized green peppers.  When summer was in full swing I transferred them from the conservatory (my makeshift greenhouse) to the patio, but I'm wondering if I should now bring them back indoors to encourage them to turn red??

Mine didn't turn red until October last year - 'twas a similar autumn if I remember - oh sorry I forgot - it's still technically "Summer"

I've got a plant a neighbour gave me, never having grown them because I 'don't like them',  cut a couple, green, yesterday and they are super.  I've been converted.  Why is it that shop bought ones have skins like cow hide?

i have tried growing sweet peppers outside and have never had much of a crop.  The greenhouse is the place be - my greenhouse crop is superb - 3 large plants with upwards of 10 big peppers on each the first in the queue is just about ready to harvest, waiting for them to turn red is a waste of time as it makes no difference to the taste.

I have 7 pepper plants which im very pleased with :D,
Ive got 6 in growbags in the greenhouse and one in a big pot. The big pot pepper has a few gone red but the others are taking there time. Not to botherd about them being ripe or not as they can be eaten when green which arnt as hot as the red un's

I would really have to disagree with you there......... IMO they are a lot sweeter if you wait for them to ripen  :)

and yes, I would bring them in if you have the space.

Thanks everyone for your replies.  I think I will bring the pepper plants indoors now and see if that speeds up the process.  I much prefer red peppers to green - the green ones seem to have more of a bitter taste and as I was hoping to preserve some in olive oil - the red ones will be much more aesthetically pleasing!!

I don't mind waiting a bit longer  :D

You may find slow roasting them makes them sweeter. Mine have been pants this year, but they're outside - it was too hot too early and is now too cold - fingers crossed for an Indian summer!

Chilli peppers, The varitey i grew this year dont really taste hot until there big or red, ive tried the smaller green ones but they dont taste hot at all, Im a bit of a chicken when it comes to eating hot ones

But i find when you put them in stir frys or currys they dont taste as hot as you think they'll taste
