Can different breeds be mixed in together?
« on: March 28, 2009, 17:48 »
Hi, Complete newbie here!!
We have been preparing our garden over the last few weeks for the arrival of our chickens.  We are almost ready - ground prepared, house built - run to build and we are now trying to choose which chooks to buy.

We planning to have 4 but wanted to know if it would be ok to buy 4 different varieties (Black Star, Gold Star, Blubelle and Speckled??) or are certain types more dominant than others and do not mix well??

Any advise greatly appreciated

Hi chickenlicken. Welcome  :)

As far as I know, pretty much any breed will get on with any other providing they are introduced at the same time. They will then sort out the pecking order and should settle down but we only have hybrids so I may be wrong  ::)

Could you post photos of what you've acheived so far ?

And if you'd like any advice on the run, we'd be happy to assist.  :)

A lot of people (me included) mix the varieties - it makes it much easier when it comes to naming them!  I started with 4 warrens and my daughter named them, but she was the only one who could say which one was which ::)

Many Thanks for your replies - will post photos as soon as we have finished.
Thank you for the advice, that is the exact reason we would prefer to have different birds, have three children and they all one want to name one each and I can already hear the bickering about which is which!
Think we will go with it so will report back once we are up and running as bound to me millions of questions!!

Thanks again

You realise you'll have to have another 10 children as an excuse to get several more chickens.  :D

Look forward to the photos.

We have Orpingtos, Marans, Bluebelles, Warrens and Light Sussex all in together and seem to get the usual pecking order scuffles but in general all ok together.

We have Black Star, White Star, Cream Legbar, and CL hybrids, different ages, sizes and temperaments and they are pretty united little flock - now!
3 o'clock is both too early and too late to start anything - Sartre said so.

Great to hear how all of you have managed to successfully mix breeds togethers -

Rob - definitely no more additions in the way of children!! but reading through it would seem chicken keeping is a bit of an addicition once started so who knows!!

Thanks for all your help

No problem at all we have just had four ladies of different varieties and today after two weeks today we have the excitement of our first egg. Wow what excitement for my 8 year old as she saw it, the look on her face was amazing.
If you get four different ones at the same time should be no problem. :)
