Roosting in nest boxes
« on: May 13, 2008, 08:52 »
How do I encourage them up onto the perches in the coop rather than the nest boxes.

Nest boxes are raised above the floor and perches are above that.

Should I close the nest boxes off before they go in to bed and lift them onto the perches?  I've even build a nice little staircase to letthem walk up to the perches.

Cleaning out would be much easier if they'd poop in the sawdust rather than the nest box straw.

I just let them do as they want, any poop in the nestbox gets cleaned out first thing every day

Hey presto everyones happy,

Well they've not complained ......

My older two use the nest box, but the new babies perch, as there isn't any room!!!! Will be adding a new nest box when they are ready to lay!! Then I bet they will tuck themselves up in there!!! I just remove the poo first thing too!

They seem a bit choosy too.  Miss Scarlet gets the left hand side one to herself.  Ruby, Lucy and Vindaloo all squeeze into the right hand one.  Ah well, I'll leave them to it and just clean out the poo.

Thought I was trying to train them, seems like they are training me.
