Hi, I planted my leeks out in 6 inch holes last week and already they are starting to show signs of thickening. However with all the really heavy rain we had yesterday the holes have filled in with soil. Should I remove some of this soil without disturbing the roots to try to recreate the hole?

Because the soil not compacted the leek when it swells will force the soil out.

Your (and my) leek holes are supposed to fill with soil after planting. Some soil will go in the holes when you water them in, and also every time it rains. Signs of thickening are good as they have taken well and means their roots are doing their job. Good luck with your first time with leeks - I adore them!!

Mine are still pretty skinny, and I noticed this week that something has been nipping at the tops of them. Don't think they're eating them, just nipping it off and chucking it away. I think it's birds, but I did cram those leeks in a bit close to the runners so I haven't got room to put netting on them.

Leeks are pretty good at rearranging the soil structure; their manner of planting and also the way they heave at the sides of their holes does a lot of good to break up the topsoil!

And here, for the second year running, they've done far better than the onions ever did!

I love leeks grown a few at home but 1st time on the new lotty over 100 no need to store great in soup, stew, sweated, in a pan au -gratin great once the oinios have gone too.

Mine seem to be doing well sound like yours are too well done.
