Carrot flowers...
« on: July 15, 2013, 23:59 »
While peering at some brassicas today, it wasn't difficult to notice two big flower heads, which I'd assumed were cow parsley.

Closer inspection of the leaves  caused huge enjoyment, as they are actually two carrots from last year (Autumn King), which have re-grown and now gone to seed!

Does this mean I can save the seed and save a squillion pounds on carrot seed...;0)

All you need to know is here:

http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/members/seed_saving/ssg14_carrot.php

As long as they're no closer than 1km away from other carrots, or you've kept them in isolation, they'll breed true!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Do you know,  DD, having read that, I've just remembered that I have a library book which is nearing it's borrow-by date, and I've got to get it back pretty soon! Then there's the paint to watch, as it's a bit warm these days..;0)

Thanks for this anyway, Pete's carrots are only on the next plot, and Sue's are the other side, a kilometer distance is just not on!

But they do look handsome plants!

Personally, I'd be tempted to give a few a go, but not rely on them as your main crop!

It's actually an interesting read, that article you mentioned, as there's a lot of 'the love of gardening' in the way it's written, and I can imagine Head Gardeners from another era doing all that because they actually knew what to do!

DD, if you'd like the seed heads, I'll keep them for you and pop them in the post!

Thanks for the kind thought, but I'll pass.

It's hardly worth speding on the postsge, I've got two very large packets of carrot seed from Moles, which only cost £2.60 for 25g - that's a lot of seed!
