Some people near me put out a wheelbarrow full of excess food, with a donation box to a charity.  The signs say "Please take some and give what you can towards xxxxxx"

I'm sorry, but what has this to do with snipping leeks?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I snip the roots of mine as they are usually so bulky that it is difficult to get the leek into its hole otherwise.  But I start mine off in a seed bed in the greenhouse, so the roots are HUGE.  I used to grow for someone else, starting them outside on much poorer soil and the roots on those were much smaller so I didn't used to bother.  I've never trimmed the tops - if they go in at the right depth/size, there is so little plant above ground that I don't think transpiration is an issue.

We have a pheasant population which seems to be able to peck our leeks!

The soods just wander around and make a noise, but I'm sure they go for our veg when we are away!
