Apple Tree Problem
« on: June 08, 2012, 14:56 »

I planted two new eating apple trees earlier this year, they flowered and produced little apples...much joy! Then last week I went to inspect the trees and all the baby developing apples are falling off...Much Sadness! What should I do? What has gone wrong!? Thank you.

Nothing is wrong really.

Trees shed immature fruit in June (called the June Drop) that are not fully formed, usually linked to poor pollination.

The apple trees are very young and young trees often 'abort' fruitlets to save the strain, as it were.

Just give them time and they should fruit for you  :D

I wouldn't worry too much Rosser.  My mature apple tree is dropping fruitlets like mad at the moment, and underneath is littered with them.  I still get plenty of mature apples in September though... pity they're cider apples though *sigh*

I get the same thing with my peaches  :( Hate to see them drop but it's nature's way of protectring the trees from stress of too much fruit. I'd have to thin them anyway.

Much the same as previous posts except that I would take off any developing fruit in a trees first year anyway , also whilst not a problem at the moment just make sure its watered during dry spells and if planted into grass keep a 12 ins area around the tree clear not only to keep competion down but to prevent accidental damage from the strimmer . Just also keep a check on any ties tree grow almost unnoticed and most trees die either thro being ringed by the strimmer /rabbits or from the ties
