Planting onion sets under platic sheeting
« on: March 01, 2010, 08:53 »
I have placed some plastic sheeting on the soil to warm it up. My question is, can I now plant onion sets in the soil underneath the sheeting to give them a good start ?

Personally I wouldn't do that, you'll keep all the moisture in, make them sweat when the sun does come out and encourage rot & mould.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Shallots/onions are as tough as nails and don't need any pampering at all.  I cover mine after planting with Enviromesh (or any old wire mesh basket or trays would do) just to keep the pesky blackbirds off them.
