2nd broad bean crop?
« on: July 17, 2011, 16:52 »
I've grown broad beans for the first time this year and I've had a good crop.

My 4 year old has finally been persuaded to try them and has decided that they're delicious :D. Brilliant, except that this epiphany has come at the end of the crop and we picked the last ones today.

Is it possible to get a second late crop if I sow again now, in a similar way to peas? Sorry if this is a dense question, but I thought that it was worth a shot :).
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

My veggie growing 'bible' tells me Feb' to June, so go on and give a few seeds a try ::)

No question is ever 'dense' an answer you cannot understand is 'dense' in that the reply wasn't phrased correctly !  :D  Cheers,   Tony.

If you have seeds and space to spare: Bung'em in & see.  ;)

Right-ho, I'll give it a whirl :D.

Why he couldn't have made this discovery when I was dishing out beans to the neighbours 3 weeks ago, I do not know ::).

First broccoli harvested today, as well as the broad beans and roasted home-grown spuds with roasted chicken. It's days like this when I remember why the hard work is worth it!

Generally broad beans aren't sown now, but you could try cutting them down as they will send up new growth that will flower.

Be quicker than sown from seed too  ;)

I freeze many things and now have a freezer in the garage too to accomodate allotment gluts, but frozen broad beans are just too much like those horrible, grey, powdery, bullet-like monstrosities of my childhood - yuck :tongue2:. Better to just savour the season, in my opinion :D.

When you say 'cut them back', how far do you mean?

Cutting them bck to about six inches gives you the chance to see the new shoots coming from the side of the plant, from the very base.

A good feed and water and they should be away, and flower buds are usually seen as soon as the shoots start to grow too  :D :D

Trimmed them this morning. I notice that someone else on the board is doing the same thing and has encouraging shoots starting.

Fingers crossed  :).
