Sour crop I think. advice please
« on: April 21, 2009, 17:02 »
I think one of my girls may have sour crop.

It was the one I had to help the soft egg out of her bum yesterday. She has runny poos and a mucky bum and her cropfeels all squishy like a water baloon. otherwise she is fine. I have been reading posts on here but am in work till midnight so just want to get everything ready for her for tomorrow.

I need to get some live bio yogurt how long will I need to feed her this untill I see an improvement. and need to take her to the vet, If she wont eat this can I syringe some into her

and in worst case scenario I need to ask vet for Anti Fungal medication. Anyone know what this is called and what the doseage may be.

Any other ideas. She hasnt got smelly breath like everyone says they shoul but she did do me a nice burp whilst I was massaging it today.

any advice gratefull.
Em

How long has she had a squishy crop em? Is it squishy in the morning before eating and drinking?
If her poos are runny and greenish she may have a gut infection from the fermented contents of her crop.  I expect if thats the case the vet will probably prescribe an anti biotic.
The yogurts a good idea.
The anti fungal vets use is called "nystatin"
You could also give her a "cleansing lavage" I cant remember exactly what the ingredients are -have it somewhere will dig it out later! :)

Only noticed the squishy crop yesterday and then again this morning, She is a bit quieter than normal but not much.

As I have been working long shifts  12 till midnight unsure if she is definately eating or not but Dad said they were all free ranging last night.

I got some batril from the poorly pig shall I give her some or wait and see.

Tomorrow I am off so can spend all or most of the day watching her to see if she is definately eating and drinking.

If it was me I would hang fire until I have been able to assess  the crop first thing in the morning as well as watching her behaviour. Another thing, she did lay a soft egg -watch and check if she is laying regulary -a soft egg might lead to other problems.
Good luck with her and happy chicken watching tommorrow! :)

If you give your girl some live maggots(not the coloured dyed ones) at bedtime those maggots will eat through her crop contents and clear her crop out. It sounds absolutely gross but it works!
My friend does this with any of her rescue hens if they have sourcrop.

Thanks Foxy, cant wait to chicken watch tomorrow, it will give me a better idea of what is going on. Im unsure if she is laying or not, being ex-bats they all go in and out of the boxes but only about 6 out of the 13 lay. But I dont mind.

Early start for me tomorrow then and hope the weather is nice to chicken watch.

Brill time to take more pics.

Ill update tomorrow after a few hours watching, but I will get them some yougurt as a treat.

Exbatmad- we are breeding mealworms will they clear out the crop or has it got to be maggots? YUCH, but will get some if it will help.

Not sure if the mealworms will do it TBH. I dont think they stay alive for long enough to chomp through
My mate uses maggots and in the morning the crop is back to normal.

I hope so she is an absolutely gorgeous chicken. When we first had her from hen rehomers she had a crossed beak and it has gone back to being normal, It took me ages to get her to let me stroke and cuddle her and allthough she is not a buff orpington and I have never seen one apart for all the gorgeous pics on here she has loads of feathers and is really fluffy for what should be a warren.

She is lovely. and called crossy beak ( although it is no longer crossed).
