Spuds
« on: June 26, 2011, 15:36 »
I know I said I wouldn't put any in this year - and I've made it this far, but seeing all the pictures of lovely clean, fresh spuds has broken my will.   ::)

I found 6 sprouting Charlottes in the cupboard so I've stuffed them in under my bean frame.  ::) Its the best soil I have, having grown 2 lots of green manure, a full darlek compost bin emptied onto it and 2 square yards of comfrey worked in.

Fingers crossed for something better than the last couple of years from them.  :D

If your previous efforts at growing potatoes have been as laid back as finding spuds to plant in late June and hoping to get a good crop I am not the least surprised that you failed.

Well as Charlottes are second early you should get a crop in about 13 weeks time - end of September :)

I didn't get my spuds in until June last year, due to illness. I was harvesting the earlies in August and in September dug up a 2lb Kestrel.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I am not the least surprised that you failed.

Neither would I be.  ::)

All my previous attempts have been thwarted by environmental factors, despite extensive preparation. Even when growing resistant varieties last year the spuds were extremely scabbed (covered) and when boiled turned to soup.  :(

Found it.

Planted June, posted 15th September last year.

Got around to digging up my remaining Kestrel today.

Here's the prize winner at just over 2lb:

So is that a Kestrel or an Ambo?

They do look pretty similar, though.
