New potatoes and no flowers
« on: June 08, 2008, 02:39 »
hi
My new tats planted end March are not yet flowering.  They are in containers, which makes it very difficult to have a root around if not impossible without damaging the Halums.  Variety Lady Christl and Charlotte.  Has anyone elses not flowered yet?

Thanks
Sheila

I have both of those spuds. Charlotte are a second early, so they will be a little later than the others anyway.

My Lady Christl were planted at the end of March also, but show no signs of flowering yet, but having said that, did get set back by frost.

My Ulster Chieftan are just coming into flower, I had a root around yesterday and have spuds about an inch long, so I'll leave them for another week or so.

Mine have been on an exposed plot, but if your containers have been somewhere a bit warmer, they may well be a bit more advanced.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I was about to ask this, as I have got Lady Christl,Kestrel,Maxine and Cara.
Some have flowers others dont, some have white flowers others have purple :?
This as you might have guessed is my first potato crop
When will they be ready to eat ? (not an exact science I know, but a rough guess would do  )
They were all planted the weekend before easter (weather and work forced this)

LC- first early
K - second early
M - early main crop, should be ready June/July, let foliage die back, weather permitting
C - late main crop, harvest end of summer, autumn, after foliage dies down, weather and blight permitting

Earlies, you can start foraging as they flower.

I did today, but didnt want to own up until authorised
My youngest (2 at the time) had an interesting game one afternoon before Easter of "lets mix up daddys seed potatos"
Luckily she only got the earlys (I hope)  so today the two plants I dug up were Lady Christl and Kestrel (pick and mix)
Some nice chicken egg sized spuds but loads malteeser sized, but dont they taste GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
The Kestrels have purple flowers I think, and would be better left for a bit longer.

My Lady Christl (some in containers most in ground) Not flowering.  Charlotte second earlies; all in ground none flowering.  Both lots looking big strong plants.

Desiree - main crop planted later and half the size noticed today lots of them have flowers on.

There can be plenty of reasons, shade, soil, frost damage, etc., under very similar growing conditions and equally chitted earlies do come up and flower sooner , even if planted later. 8)

Some early main crop can beat them to it though.
