Plum Tree

i have just planted one and was wondering do i need to put a band on it to protect it from bugs climbing up it?

Every year I mean to put out codling traps and every year I forget.  Last year I made a lovely batch of plum and caterpillar jam! 
I would say it is a good idea but as Nige2plots says at this time of year I'd be more concerned about making sure the tree is looked after well for the winter with good staking.

I have to put protection from Bunnies around my way, they chew the botton foot given the chance.
