I cant even get mine to grow  >:(

Why is that?  do they just stunt and not fill out, or do you mean germination problems?

I pickle as well - did some of the giant ones at the end of last year, cut into slices.

As I don't like beetroot they were re-homed. Must have been OK as I've got orders for more.

I do sucessive sowings of about 15 feet at a time, got about 60 feet on the go at the moment. Try & pull them golf ball size, but there's always some biggies at the end of the year.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If it helps to gauge time wise, I sowed mine on 20th April & pulled the first few a couple of weeks ago. Got 24 today!

yes yes!!! I would recommend beetroot and chocolate cake...earthy, comforting and what I would call a very sexy cake! It's really fun to make as you can puree the beetroot and mix it in with rest of cake mixture which makes the prettiest marbling effect you will ever see. I love beetroot for so many reasons!

My wife cooks them with orange and turns them into soup, then freezes it, absolutely the best,

She planted loads this year for the same thing, but the Isle of Lewis wind struck and the fleece wore all the little leaves away and they have not come back. Never mind you can't win them all, My ducks heard that I was going to eat them and decided that laying eggs was a good bet, well done girls.

Thanks for suggestions. We're making beetroot cake this afternoon (I hope).
Will try storing in peat (Shhhh....)

We always keep our cakes in a tin  ::)

Yes I could have phrased it better  ::)   Although maybe the cake would keep very well in peat.

We had a beetroot day yesterday. Steamed 1/2 doz for cake and salaf at lunchtime, Made cake in afternoon and cooked another 1/2 doz in oven, simply wrapped in foil. These were EXCELLENT. Tastier and more tender than steamed. We had them hot with butter (as a vegetable, rather than as salad). And the cake afterwards, with a good dollop of double cream.

I don't think were going to be needing the peat foer storage  :)

I did them roast with honey - delish

(2 tbs each honey, olive oil,  2 tsp balsamic vinegar, throw in some thyme.  Cut beets into wedges cover with mix and roast for 20-30 mins)
trying to be green except when blue

Do they bleed a lot if you cut them before cooking?

Not really - I cut the top and bottom off too.  Used a pyrex dish and got them straight into the oven.  The 'sauce' is beetroot coloured and sweet too.  Some are still in the fridge as this improves over 24 hrs.
