Of shallots and mice.......
« on: March 13, 2012, 20:31 »
On saturday me and the missus planted our 60 shallots. 20x Aristocrat and 40x Vigarmor. Last night while collecting our eggs, i decided to flash the torch ove the shallots to make sure all was well. It wasnt.
One of the Aristocrats had been pulled up and moved about three foot, and three of the vigarmor the same, but one of these i could not find. Just been up again, and about 5 of the vigarmor had been pulled. I replanted 4 and lost one. On inspection there is a set of small teeth marks on it. Could it be mice?
What to stop them?

yes its more than likely mice, put traps down, i would advise putting netting down, but they'll chew through it!

I think your problem might be birds pulling them up, not mice.  Just push them back in and net if possible. :)

That doesn't mean a mouse pulled them up in the first place, but one might have had a taste when it was on top of the soil.

There are teeth marks yup. All the shallots are shooting too and i think birds usually pull them up when they just have a whispy top.
First thing to plant out this year and the pests have started already!!

I agree with Ice that its most likely a mouse or vole having an trial munch once the shallot was out of the ground Matt, decided 'yuck' and left it  :)

Magpies and rooks, even blackbirds, pull shallots and onion sets up even once growing - just for devilment .  A mouse would  usually leave them alone and target pea and bean seeds  :)

Mice are the bane of my life in my veggie beds, but the one thing they never ever touch is any type of onion. Haven't got any squirrels around, have you? They pull things up, chew them and chuck them away just for the fun of it.

I've watched blackbirds here tugging at young garlic and shallot plants.

I have usually found birds like to disturb onion sets but as has been said - they dont have teeth. Try a dusting of curry powder - it puts mice off my peas when they are germinating.
