Hi all, am looking to grow Brussels sprouts this year as we love them (even kids), but have never grown them before. Before I purchase seed, can anyone help me with choosing a reliable variety that even a newbie can make a reasonable success of please. I really have no ideas on this one. Any tips would also be greatly appreciated too. Thanks in advance!

I've done 2 years of Maximus now and they've been reliable and sweet with a strong yield.

I grow two - Nelson and Trafalgar, (there must be some connection there). Good crop of firm, sweet sprouts.

This page on this site is worth a read:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Really firm soil.  Rolling it is fine!

Stake at initial planting (to prevent damaging roots later). Tie up as they grow.  Need to stop them moving in the wind.

Cover with netting with small enough mesh to keep Cabbage White Butterfly out. Scaffolders Debris netting is the cheap & cheerful option

Hello - thanks for advice and varieties. We are quite an exposed plot so behind my composter might give them some shelter do you think. I'll have a look through seed catalogue and let you all know how I get on.
Once again - thank you!
