Manure on a Brassica bed?
« on: January 25, 2011, 20:18 »
hi,
about August time last year i was asked to move some manure off the site car-park to make room for our open day.
i had to spread a load on a bed i had made as my manure compost was already full, i then realized i was going to use this bed in my rotation to plant brassicas.
my garlic has gone in the bed before so its messed up my rotation so i was wondering as its been so long on there if i just turn it in then lime it would my brasicas do ok in it?

thanks as usual

manure on a brassica bed sounds alright to me - in fact, they should do very well  :D  If well rotted manure and been down since August, I see no problem of adding lime to the bed at this stage.
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.

Just to check: Are you sure the bed needs lime?  Worth doing a pH test first I think (unless you are using lime as a prophylactic treatment for Club-root perhaps?

yes its for clubroot apparently its common on the site so lime is used to help prevent it.

I think for clubroot you need lime into the planting hole (i.e. that will be more effective than liming the whole bed), and to raise plants in pots (to a decent size) before planting them out. There is also a clubroot resistant strain I think.

However, its not something I have had to deal with so best to wait for advice from someone who knows.

Speaking from experience, Kristen is right.

Kilaxy cabbage and Clapton caulis are two clubroot resistant varieties, both have done well for me and my ground is rife with it.

I raise the seeds in individual cells, pot on into 3" pots and then plant out when about 6" high. By this time they have a good root ball and are thrown into a hole along with a handful of lime.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My grandad always put manure on his brassica bed and limed afterwards but always left time between. He said to leave manure off your potato bed (don't know why), but threw Growmore on a few weeks before planting.

Good luck!

Lime on potatoes will likely lead to scab.
