The Ducks are here!!!!

We picked up the ducks last night from a lovely lady. Brought them home and let them out into their pen, at first they just sat in the corner looking a little worried, but as soon as we went in to the house (to watch out the window) they were all in the pond.

They then spent most of the night in the water.

The cat and the Bantams got their first look at the ducks this morning, the bantams were terrified at first and hid in their house, the cat just wants to get a closer look, he no danger to them though as he is scarred of Bantams.

They are now sleeping in the sun.

"They say that there are, this year, double the usual quantity of ducks and geese: and, really, they do seem to swarm in the farm-yards, wherever I go. It is a great mistake to suppose that ducks and geese need water, except to drink. There is, perhaps, no spot in the world, in proportion to its size and population, where so many of these birds are reared and fatted as in Long Island; and it is not in one case out of ten that they have any ponds to go to, or that they ever see any water other than water that is drawn up out of a well".
William Cobbett, 12th September 1826, Tutbury, Gloucestershire.

Hermon,

No eggs as yet, as they are only 7 weeks old. But they are supposed to be good layers, but at the end of the day they are pets.

Don't know what sort of land you are on - a farm/smallholding or a domestic plot. Goats eat ANYTHING and everything.
Our neighbour (in a village) had a goat (the kind with the toggles under the chin) called Anabel. She was lovely as a kid, the human kids used to talk her for walks. However, she grow up and had horns which were just the right height to butt the human kids with and some nasty accidents occurred. Anabel was staked on the allotments with a 'stout' stake. Allotment holders were not too happy. She often escaped, but usually when her owners were around. One day AHolders fears were justified because Anabel escaped when no one was looking and she had a FEAST. After that she went to the local goat farm.

She loves goats but would only keep some on a well stocked farm. :)
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

I know I haven't got room for goats and would dream of keeping any fully grown ones in my garden, I am however on the look out for a field to buy/rent, then I may get some.

DON'T GET A BAGOT GOAT!!!!

They are semi feral.  We rescued one and I had a long chat with the lady who runs the Bagot Goat Soiecty.  She has 40 of them and said that in the winter when they are kept indoors, each one has to have its own pen, or they'd kill each other, and even out in the field they have to be fed as far apart as possible or they pinch each others food.

Our William used to do that, our other goat was a chocolate brown Pygmy called Winkie, and he is a darling, but William used to be really nasty to Winkie and also used to steal his food.  Then poor Winkie would walk over to William's bowl to eat and William used to follow him and that went on for ages.  Mind you, winkie stood up for himself.  I decided that workign full time and with a long commute to work, I couldn't look after them properly, so they now live on an acre field with 12 Soay sheep owned by a horse lady in Hampshire.
