what can I plant in June?
« on: May 31, 2007, 10:30 »
Hi, sorry if there is already a post with this on, still trying to find my way around  :D

I've just taken on a plot and was wondering what you would suggest I planted?  Suppose I should be getting things started for the autum and winter now?

I'm in Southampton, not sure how much that will affect what I can plant?

Any advice would be great!

Hi  :D

I would start planing things that grow really quickly :D. Lettuce, Radish, Rocker, Spinach, Turnips, Beetroot and Carrots.

You may also still be able to buy Tomato, Cucumber and Sweetcorn plants from your local nurseries or garden center.

Hope That Helps!!

Are they a certain type of spuds that can be ready at Christmas?

I'm really hoping to give my friends a basket of veg as a Christmas present for their Christmas dinner     (other half thinks I'm mad!)

not sure if it is even possible, but spuds would be a great addition  :D

Potatoes grown for Christmas should preferably have been held in cold storage. Alan Romans (http://www.AlanRomans.com) and Thompson and Morgan (erh, I don't like T&M!) both sell them, they are not cheap but worth it.

Alternatively you could always try and plant some spuds from  the supermaket, I know a guy who swears by them

Charlotte are my favorite Christmas spuds to grow.

I recommend courgettes - they will be ready by the end of the summer and have very few pests.

There are many other things that are good in the short terms, like radishes, lettuces etc..., but courgettes are fairly easy and prolific

Good luck!

but certainly not new potatoes since the tubers require a long period of dormancy before they will sprout (we usually call this winter)
