Anyone heard of Kings Seeds?
« on: August 10, 2009, 17:31 »
Hi

Has anyone heard or purchases seeds from Kings?  My allotment association uses their seeds and recommend them to me, however they are megga cheep  i.e 70p per pack but I've not heard of most of their breeds (if thats the right word i.e I have heard of carrot Nantes but they supply mainly non heard of breeds).

I am inclined to not want to buy cheep seeds because they could be GM or tampered with or manufactured abroad with less strict breeding conditions etc...  But would appreciate other peoples views especially those who know all about these seeds.

I feel I am being pushed a little into buying these seeds and would rather stick to the old favourites such as Suttons, Thompson and Morgan etc...

Also I am thinking of buying Alan Titchmarsh's range of organic seeds from Suttons.

What are your thoughts and do you buy from Kings?

Thank you
OVP

They are a reputable, long established firm, that numerous members of this forum have recommended in the past.

If I recall correctly, their seeds are (or were) sold at the Lost Gardens of Heligan, which is a good recommendation.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Kings/Suffolk Herbs is an old, well know and respected seed supplier (since 1888)
They sell quite a rage of organic seeds.
They do stock Nantes carrots, so the varieties you are being offered maybe something to do with your allotment association,

If you look at Kings website you will see that they supply a lot of familiar varieties (Chantenay, Autumn King and Berlicum carrots for example) but they are more than 70p per packet.  Is your allotment association offering a limited part of their range cheaply as part of some deal?

Kings offer an organic range and also own Suffolk Herbs.  They are a reputable company.

Most seeds sold in this country are produced abroad - our climate is not sufficiently reliable.

Cheers,

Gillie

Thank you all for your replies, i think my allotment membership group gets a discount hence the price.

I will have another re-think about Kings, the other thing that put me off was that the chairman said that "all the garden ctrs stock them but I havent seen them in the shops".

I appreciate your responses.

kind regards

I had all my seeds for this season from Kings through the allotment association, they seemed ok to me, they were cheap & there was an organic seed section in their catalogue.  I think for 70 pence a packet instead of £1.70 or however much other brands cost, it's worth trying them out.

Our allotment uses Kings.  We get everything from them including seed potatoes.  Have not had any problems with them.

Kimberley04, where are you in Manchester.  I'm on Colliery Fields at Denton.

Use Kings for the last 6 years! as you say £0.70 instead of £2.00
They do what they say on the packet! :nowink:

Not seen them outside the allotment shop?

Yes some of the local firms around here stock and sell them. Saw them recently on one of the market stalls.

People are willing to buy cheap seeds from Wilkinsons, Netto, Aldi, Lidl but I prefer to buy something a little more tried and tested. So Kings will do me amongst other brands.

:D  I support everything that has been said, I have used them for quite a few years with good results.  You just get fairly plain packaging i.e. no pictures but good seeds and cheaper than I can get elsewhere locally.
