Sand store growing!
« on: July 30, 2009, 10:41 »
OK so I carefully lifted some beetroot and packed into damp sand.  Is in my garage - cool, dull but not dark.  Just noticed new leaves sprouting!   Two at least are growing leaves again and I haven't disturbed to investigate further.

Do I get those out, take the leaves off and leave them be - change the sand or dry it out  - or what??? Help! no room left in freezer and am about to be inundated by runner beans anyway. Was going to pack my carrots the same way but am holding fire till I get instructions :)

I know that it is considered bad when sugar-beet start regrowing: the beet use up all the sugars & things to make the new leaves  :(, so I presume that beetroot are the same. The leaves have got to come from somewhere !!
Maybe your sand was/is too damp. Should be almost bone dry ???
Ours are still in the ground, havent had time to lift them.

I think you've tried to store too early.

You can only really do it with mature roots and should wait until the end of the season.

If it's baby beets you've tried to store, these will naturally be trying to grow to full size.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oh :(   Some were  cricket ball size but some were the smaller ones ... best get 'em out and eat some more and leave the rest to mature in the ground then.

Can I do carrots now or are they better in the ground too?

Leave them!

Personally I leave them in the ground all winter.

I don't take up beetroot! I've had them sit through winter before.

However, if I was to store things, I'd be looking at late October/early November probably, before the really severe frosts.

I don't like beetroot! I grown them for others & those I made beetroot pickle for in November with the big ones came back and asked for more.

Leave them in the ground. Earth them up a little or cover lightly with bracken, asparugus tops, straw, or whatever to hand if sharp frost threatens.

The growing leaves of those you have in sand may use some of the sugars but they will be OK.
