Info about Daikon, a winter radish
« on: June 10, 2006, 15:28 »
Well, RHS's regular magazine has again managed to address all my weird concerns with a How to Grow Mooli Radish article. Apparently the 'Black Spanish Round' I have seeds for is related to the daikon. They need to be planted after mid-summer's day because they bolt due to lengthening hours of sunlight (AHHA! that's where we were going wrong, John!!)
They like not too rich or moist soil and they're ideal to put in after early potatoes with no added fertilizer before they go in.

So I guess I'll be planting more daikon after all in a few weeks!  :D I'll try my 'Black Spanish Round' seeds too... I forgot to try planting those last year
Might try the Mantanghong kind if I can buy some seeds for it. I've seen seeds for that variety in stores more often than for just plain daikon. It's the kind with the green/white outside and red inside.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.
