well chuffed today
« on: May 06, 2009, 15:26 »
was chatting to a m8  the other day and he was telling me about his allotment. I told him i was on a waiting list but meanwhile was growing in tubs till i got one. He told me about how he uses raised beds in his own garden which he made from some packing cases he got from work and he would have a look at work as he was sure there were some left over. He sorted me out  with 6 of these things and i have to say they are bl**dy marvelous. theyr'e about 5' x 3' and about 9" deep with hinged corners. I cant wait to get them in position and filled up ready to go.

heres some pics.

PS

oh i forgot to say they also stack up on top of each other for a deeper bed

What a great find! And so handy to grow small stuff at home like lettuce, radish, etc.

thats what they'll be used for plus doubling one up to give extra depth for carrots.

There's an enterprising chap here in NZ selling precisely those as "Garden Collars" http://www.kiwicollars.co.nz/page3.html
I bought a 4 pack set of them and they work extremely well! One of the beauties is that you can easily raise them to any height you want without having to construct.

Mind you, if anyone Plottered wants to send me a few from the UK free of charge.... 8)

They look really excellent. One of ours 1m by 2m is keeping a lrge number of children in fresh salad leaves, lettuce and radishes, whilst waiting forr the french beans, beetrrot & purple carrots to be ready -- you can really pack these beds if you feed and water well and have a good succession plan..,go for it  :D
