SWOLLEN FACE
« on: November 21, 2008, 18:00 »
One of my chooks has had a very swollen face on one side. The vet lanced it and got some pus out   and she is now on anibiotics and painkillers and I am £66 poorer!

Oddly a friend of mine took her chook to the vet on the same day with exactly the same problem

My other 3 birds are fine so I don't think this is an infectious condition.

I'd be interested to know if s anyone else has come acorss this problem and what was the outcome?

I'm glad to say that my chook is doing well so far. Fingers crossed.

Sounds like an abscess of some sort (not medically trained of course ! ).

Could she have injured her face soemhow and got a bit or muck in the wound ?  ...or maybe been pecked ?

Whereabouts on teh face was it Sticky ??

Hi

It was her whole face that was swollen and her eye was shut.

I think it started in the summer when I ntoiced a small lump in the area between her beak and her eye. It was just a swelling under the skin . It wasn't a wound . She was treated with Baytril in her drinking water but the lump never quite went away. As it didn't seem to trouble her I just left it alone but last Saturday when I let her out her whole face was horribly swollen

I have pasted a link to another site which shows a picture of bird with a lump that looked just like the one my bird had to begin with.

http://www.chickencrossing.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=2646&p=1

Unlike the chicken in this picture, mine did not have any other symptoms

She is on Baytril again now, but this time I give it straight into her beak rather than in her water and it does seem to be working as she looks a lot less swollen this morning.

I would just be interested to hear any thoughts as to what the problem could be especially as I mentioned before that my friend's chicken had the same problem on the same day!

Think there was a post about this a while ago but I can't find it.

There is a condition called swollen head syndome but not sure it sound exactly like what you are describing. There's some info here:

http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/206300.htm&word=chicken%2cswollen%2chead
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Hi Paddywack,

No she did not. It was a more general swelling all over the face than that and but more pronounced under the eye. It was an abcess as the vet lanced it and got some of the infection out but it started as a small lump like the one in the picture I posted. It was like that for weeks and didn't seem to bother her but suddenly got much worse over one night. Very strange.

She is almost back to normal now thank goodness :D

Hi stickywicket

Happy to know she is on the mend, the disease in the picture is mycoplasma not very nice for the chuck, i am glad it was not that.

Hope she stays happy and healthy
