old compost
« on: October 15, 2018, 17:11 »
what's your thoughts about re using old composts like grow bags that have been used for growing strawberries as I know a commercial PYO grower who sells this seasons  grow bags of at a very good price

apart from using it on my raised beds would you use it for potting on seedlings or plants and repotting shrubs in tubs or maybe make a raised salad bed cold frame?

I'd only use it to top up things like raised beds. There's unlikely to be anything useful left in old grow bags and such I think. Well except body to fill up sinking beds.

It needs a general fertiliser - something like Blood, Fish and Bone to be added to it, before reuse, as all the nutrients will already have been used, this year.

Once you've topped up the nutrients, the only thing from your list I wouldn't use it for, is for seed sowing. I like to shake out any large root balls, as well.

I just tip it onto my compost heaps or in the darlek, with kitchen and green waste and let the worms mix it all in. By next spring it will be ready for use.

I'd certainly add some  basic fertilizer and use it for anything that needs topping-up, but not for seeds.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

We use old growbag stuff for spuds or toms. Just add some more fertiliser, swirl it all in and realise that it's a pretty good medium for next year!

After all, you're only using something which has exhausted its nutrient, but still has the body and structure of a lovely growing substance!

I often use the same stuff for two years, maybe more - why not!

I add some fertiliser, and use it for flowers, performs very well.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.
