Victoria plum
« on: May 10, 2018, 15:39 »
I planted out a Victoria plum in mid March and it has made spectacular growth from the buds I left on, almost 8 inches for most shoots. I am no expert but good sense tells me to restrict this growth by pruning out the tips of the new shoots to divert some of the energy into building up these shoots ... is this the correct idea?

For the first year after planting I'd just leave it to grow and establish itself unless shoots were crossing or causing congestion. They'll thicken up of their own accord if left.

I was told by a very old countryman to never prune Victoria plum trees. They prune themselves by branches breaking under the strain of massive crops

You don't prune stone fruits till August/September.

I'd agree with everyone else, and just add the following that I was told by my Grandad in regard to plum trees.
Prune them for shape if you must, but they'll do just fine on their own, and if you mess about with them too much you'll only introduce disease.
