Too late for garlic?
« on: April 15, 2018, 21:31 »
Hi all. Has anyone planted garlic this late? I'm late getting started again this year and we love garlic, but I usually do it in November.  I'm assuming it would be smaller, but I'll have missed the cold snap.

As you appear to realise, garlic needs a period of cold to induce the bulbs to split into cloves when planted, although as I understand it, this period can be either before or after planting.

The garlic you are intending to plant may have been pre-vernalised, or perhaps you have some you have stored over winter in cold conditions?

When in doubt, give it a go anyway is my motto!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I planted some garlic that had gone soft and stated sprouting last spring and I thought it has rotted until I noticed it had come up earlier this year and now looks fine. It must have just sat there thinking about it all last year until the weather turned cold.
