early cabbage
« on: January 18, 2018, 18:45 »
we went to a plant nursery yesterday to have a look around and I seen they have some cabbage [primo] growing  in trays they where to the two leaf stage and where they where growing was a bit on the cold side

so I'm a bit tempted to sow a few [primo] cabbage seed I thought it as a bit early for sowing because I always start my cabbage seed of in March has anyone started sowing there cabbage yet

I'm not going to start sowing till I get some advise from our members on site

I sow my Hispi in mid-Feb and they stay in the greenhouse til mid march and then go under debris netting, which I suppose also gives some protection.
T&M suggests a Jan sowing is possible though

Last year I sowed some Primo at the start of February, kept under cover until I planted out at the end of March.

I don't view Primo as an early cabbage, more a summer variety. I'd look at fast maturing varieties such as Greyhound and Hispi.

I can guarantee you'll get Greyhound first. They don't have that name for no reason! They'll be followed by Serpentine - a Savoy type and then the good old January King. I'll also grow a few Kalibos - a pointed red cabbage and Red Drumhead - for pickling.
