Tigernuts have you tried them.
« on: December 29, 2017, 07:32 »
There was a section in a garden magazine last season about thewe little nuts, well they are not acually a nut they are a tuber, with a grass top above ground they grow on the roots down below.
I bought 12 plug plants, planted them in a tub and left them to grow, you will know when they are ready when the grass dies off in the autumn.
We harvested them a few weeks ago,a bit fiddley but we ended up with about 300,when they are picked you need to wash them off then bring them in to dry off on a piece off kitchen towel.
You can eat them fresh they taste cross between an almond and a brazil nut,but the good thing is they are not a nut and they are packed full of vitamins minerals and high in fibre and protein, there is plenty of information about them on the internet if anyone is interested.
We also made some tiger nut milk, and flour from the husks so there is no waste at all :).

Used to really enjoy them as a slightly chewy and unusual-tasting 'sweet' in the late fifties, and tried to buy some from a specialist sweet shop in Tenby when we were on holiday a couple of months ago, but no joy.

A quick gurgle suggests the plug plants are a bit dear, although seeds (?) are available for £2.

Growing in a container seems to be recommended, although I'm not sure whether they need to be in a GH.

Were yours inside or outside Lillileaf?

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

We grew our tigernuts outside in a container,i would try growing in a greenhouse as they grow well in high humidity, the nuts we have grown will be put in a container and used for seed so i don't have to buy any more plug plants, much cheaper that way.

A friend grew some this year.  They were too hard to chew.  I suspect that they need to be grown fast to keep them tender.

Hmm. Looks like unpeeled tiger nuts can be a bit chewy when dried, and benefit from soaking first. Peeling dozens if not hundreds of tiger nuts doesn't sound like much fun to me, and even then they may still need soaking.

I'm still intrigued enough to consider giving them a go next year though.

If you find them to hard to chew,we tend to soak them for 48hrs,keep them in the fridge so they don't ferment, they are also called chufa nut, they are grown in spain and Africa.

There are a number of places you can buy them peeled and ready to eat.

I had some for Christmas, and am looking forward to trying to grow them, as they were a real childhood favourite. I've looked up how to grow them and they look quite straightforward (she says with confidence )

Not sure what sort of yield you get per planted tuber ("nut") so does anyone have any idea please?

If you can't eat them find someone who goes fishing. They are a good carp bait! Don't eat the carp though - you'll be hung by your thumbs if the anglers catch you!
