If in doubt don't. Best stack it under cover till spring and then apply to rhubarb. We'll that's just me.

Hope its ok to slightly highjack the post... I have recently got a new allotment with about 5 different rhubarb plants dotted around on it. They're all pretty much surrounded by perennial weeds. Do I need to wait till winter to dig them up (because they are not where I want them) and is it likely that I can get the weeds out of the crowns or not?
thanks

If you look at the division section on the RHS website they suggest November as a good time to lift and divide so should be good for transplanting too.

It'll be a job to pull out the perennial weeds but shouldn't be a huge job - especially if you divide the crowns so you aren't trying to pull them away from a whole established rhubarb.   You could end up with eight rhubarbs from the sound of it!

Re the manure above - I think fresh manure isn't advised on new grown things - but plonking it on something that's going to be dormant for months sounds fine and is what I do.

Absolutely no problem to use it. The rhubarb won't be sprouting for 3 to 4 months, by which time it will be sufficiently weathered/rotted.

I always put fresh manure around, but not on top of, our rhubarb crowns at this time of the year
