Is this a good Mulch?
« on: July 21, 2017, 19:44 »
Hi,
Last Sept I had a very large Sycamore tree cut down in my garden (it was end of life and had to chop before it fell), the tree surgeon left a huge pile of chippings that went through the shredder, these are now pretty well rotted (see image)
my question:
Would this materal be a good mulch for my brand new built and filled raised beds? (beds are now full of compost / Pete / vermitulte mix)
They are currently empty of crops and planning on adding a good 1.5 - 2 inch layer of chippings but a bit concerned that this may not be a good idea?
Any feedback please??
Thanks Neil

I personally would not use as a mulch. I don't think there is any goodness in it

Thank you for the reply, I was kind of hoping the goodness would be under the mulch and this would just be for moisture retention / weed control and it would just compost into the beds over time?
Due to the time of year I am expecting most of the bed space to be empty till the spring time appart from some seeds I have germinating in the greenhouse.

Sorry to disagree green jay. They should be fine, take a look at the Back to Eden method of growing on YouTube or look in the gardeners diaries on here for beeskissed back to Eden method.

P.s, seems a shame not to plant anything this year in those beds

I put rotted down chippings in my raised beds and I have had the best crops I have ever had.   :D  Go for it.

I use the BTE or woodchips method all over my garden, tubs, planters and flower beds. Its not ideal for sowing seeds into woodchip but young plants can be easily planted through woodchips into the soil below.
If you are not using the beds this year, put a layer of rotted manure down before the woodchips and let the worms do all the work.
