Noticed a few just starting to appear yesterday when weeding the area - slug bait now down to improve my chances of winning the race to eat them first!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Damage to early slow growing tips may be due to asparagus beetle.

I have cut two spears off which were damaged by frost and cut six more which were delicious. A whole lot more just showing now. I thought they were waiting for warmth but it may be water as we are very dry here now. Perhaps I will give them a can of water today.

My asparagus has been there for at least 10 years, maybe more, so it's perfectly possible the asparagus beetle has found them, but I've never actually spotted one at any stage of growth.

I have spotted one or two slugs and snails over the years though!  ::)

This is the second year for mine.  Some spears on the Mondeo variety just poking through, no sign on the Guelph Millennium yet.  Hope to take a few spears only this year, may be one from each plant.

On the south coast mine has been going strong for over a week; cut enough for tea last week and and fingers crossed there will be more than enough to have with our fish tonight. I inherited my asparagus, not sure how long it's been there but there's plenty of it, which is good because I'm a huge lover of the stuff.

A couple of spears are 6" high but I am waiting for a few more before harvesting. Hopefully this week end will give me enough for a meal.
Cheers HH
Keep digging

I've had a few spears pop up the last week.
My Asparagus (Connover's Colossal) is only five crowns and has done so well for the last decade, producing a great crop each year.

I'm growing a few varieties from seed this year, as was given some seed so thought it would be fun.
Will place the grown crowns in a new bed I've reserved. Nice journey over years for Asparagus growing.
The seeds I'm growing are Connover's Colossal and Mary Washington Heirloom.

But, saw this the other day growing Asparagus in containers.
It will be fun to try. The video is in three parts and takes you over the years from planting crowns to getting the spears.

I've been cutting mine as and when they're long enough, and sticking them in a glass of water in the fridge.  Finally have enough for tea tonight.  :tongue2:
