Ramming canes into the ground.
« on: July 25, 2016, 14:35 »
Anyone got any ideas on how to stop the bottoms of carden canes splitting when ramming them into the ground?   I did think about 'trying' to find some close tolerance copper tubing then closing the end off, but as I've just got in a batch of big canes, the end diameter are so different.

Over to you inventors, designers and thoughtful members. ;)  Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I hammer in a metal spike to make a hole first and then push the cane in
Hope that helps

Cutting the cane at 45° close to a node works too.

Thanks for those answers,  I like the 45 degree below a node. :)

Thanks and Cheers,   Tony.

wet the soil (best soon after rain) and they are much easier to sink into the soil

Usually, I hold the cane as vertical as I can, and tap it down with a medium weight hammer.

As long as I don't fling the thing around, and take my time, I get the cane in its correct place with little difficulty, and also in the position that I want - rather than the position the cane wants to lean...

Canes are surprisingly happy with this arrangement!

And so am I!
