blackcurrant & redcurrant bushes for £2
« on: June 24, 2016, 12:13 »
A plant stall at our local market was selling off fairly mature currant bushes for £2 this week, so bought myself a redcurrant and a blackcurrant on impulse. Now I realise I have nowhere to put them that gets good sunlight. Am I right to think they will do OK in ground under the shade of a tree (they'll get sunlight until about midday, I reckon)? The blackcurrant has quite a lot of unripe currants on it, although the redcurrant seems to have had the currants mostly stripped from the plant (only stalks remaining). Any other advice on planting them out?

Looks like the blackbirds got to the redcurrants before you, get used to that unless you net them.

As long as they are getting some sunshine they should be ok. Obviously they will not produce as good a crop as if they were in full sun. The redcurrants maybe more so as they ripen much earlier so they have plenty of time to get to that ripe stage before harvesting.

My redcurrants are in the rain shadow of a (hopefully soon to depart) goat willow. They don't get sun before midday but then get full sun until sunset. I have just propagated some blackcurrants last year, they will be planted in a full sun position.

When you do start getting fruit don't leave it too late to net them.

Mine don't live in full sun and turn beautifully though I can't remember which part of the day they get sun.  It's raining here today so no clues!

£2 sounds a bit of a bargain! Just remember that they will need some extra water for the first few months if the weather is ever dry.

And as others have said, they don't mind part shade
