Pumpkin female flowers problems
« on: August 30, 2015, 18:08 »
Hi everyone,
So finally the female flowers are popping, BUT - they all rots and die. I've no idea why, and i dont think its snails/slugs cause the plant growing on a fence.
 Adding some pics:

Thanx

If they are rotting it means they are not pollinating - are there some male flowers around? It has been very wet so probably not many insects around to pollinate them so you could manually pollinate. However I would say it is probably too late in the year to get any fruits from them now sadly

It's not just a lack of male flowers. Temperature and moisture both also have an impact on whether the plant keeps the female fruits or aborts them. It's not been a great year for squash tho.

Adding your location to your profile might help (click on your username to do so) then we might have an idea of your climate  ;)

Like I said, temperature and moisture can affect fruit set. If it's too hot or too dry, or a combination of both, the plants will abort their fruit. If it's too cold and wet they may do the same.

On one of my squash plants I had one flower set, and every female flower since then has rotted before the flower has even opened too. Don't know why I'm afraid - it's my first year growing squash, but it's really frustrating!

Justniv will no doubt be aware that none of us in the UK will have any experience of growing squashes in temperatures of 38C (except possibly for short periods in greenhouses), and it's certainly unusual to see the ovary rotting before the flower has even opened, although rot due to pollination failure is much more common of course.)

Have you looked inside the rotting ovaries to see if there's any evidence of an insect pest which may have bored its way in and caused the rot to set in?
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I don't think it's that unusual - I had this a lot both this year and last, which I am putting down to moisture issues & my failure to deal with them. I've taken off another 3 today from Small Sugar, Flat White and Potimarron plants. I think I posted a question about the same issue last year too, though it might have been a different forum.

If you google the question you get a list of articles about squash fruits aborting before opening, which state that this is generally down to high temperatures, to much/too little water or a combination of both. Most of the articles I've read are written by growers in the US.

Is it possible that the developing fruit behind the flowers got wet during watering and then rotted from the combined effect of water and sunlight?

I've not seen damage like that here, but my first thought at seeing photo two (with the round damage) was that water had got to the fruit, followed by a pest of some sort making the most of the soft patch. Could also be the case of photo four. No idea about photo three mind, unless it's scorch caused by the metal mesh. Seems unlikely though.

Do you usually grow squash in the same way? Have you had similar problems before? Do you have many pests about?
