cabbage whites and coriander

I accidentally (!) sowed a whole row of coriander between Brussels and cabbages. Today was the first time I've found any caterpillars on any of the brassicas. I didn't get around to netting them, and expected the whole lot to be decimated by now. Could it be the pungent scent from all that coriander confusing the butterflies?

One of the benefits, maybe the only one, of such a cold wet Summer is the lack of Cabbage Whites looking to lay eggs on the Brassicas.

could well be - butterflies "sniff out" brassicas and that scent can be masked. A smelly brew of rhubarb leaves rotted in water watered over the cabbages is well known, also growing strong scented flowers like lavender nearby too.

Purple top white turnips sown thinly in the cabbage patch helps deter cabbage whites too.

Yes... i grew turnips in with cabbages for a few years when i had the lottie. Now i am just growing at home its easy to net, but still do grow turnips as a kind of belt and bracers. Its the smell that puts them off.

How does the smell of one brassica put off Cabbage Whites from laying eggs on said plants when they hunt by smell? If it works then it works just confused.

They just smell so much different to other brassica plants. Our lass even refused to peel em so i have to do it.
