Butternut Hunter vs Harrier
« on: March 29, 2015, 19:17 »
Last year I grew 2 types of butternut squashes hunter and harrier both F1s. One did really well 6/7 fruits the other had on average about 3, both sets of fruits were about the same size. Can't remember which was which now! Any one tried either of these?

I grow Harrier because it sets early and well, but I find the squash is not as big as the supermarket ones.

I haven't grown Hunter so can't compare

I grew hunter last season for the first time. Very late to set fruit but there were loads of them which kept stored until January. There were various sized fruit from the size of standard bought squash to small which was fine dependent on what they were being used for.

Hunter for me, too!  Still eating them from last year.  Good size and kept really well in a dark cupboard in the spare room. (actually on top of some old music, so maybe they liked Schubert more than I do!).

Got more for this year. Hunter again.

What mixed bag of responses! wish I'd written down what did well for me! Will have to try them both again and see what does best. Thanks for all your replies

I have only grown Harrier of those two and I thought they where very nice.  As mum says they are small but there was a lot of them. Growing them again this year.
