Squash haul 2014
« on: October 13, 2014, 19:25 »
This is the first year I've not been late planting out my squashes and I am so chuffed with the haul!

They should keep us supplied for winter - we've eaten 3 already and there are 2 butternuts still growing on the plot.

They look lovely, so many varieties, what are they? I know the Thelma Sanders from other threads/posts. I'm in danger of being sent to the norty step for waffling on the competition thread but I keep forgetting when I see each new photo . Can we waffle on this one ? Yes I know I just have

Waffle away! I didn't pile them in a logical way - the 2 orange ones at the back are rouge vif d'etamps, the big tan one at the back is muscat de provence, then there is a crown prince on the left, next to a stripey tonda padana, a black futsu balanced on the queensland blue with the last potimarron in front of that. There are a couple more black futsus (seeds for the circle), butternut and the thelma sanders.

Am really looking forward to trying them all over the next months - most of them are new varieties to me.

As we are waffling I thought I'd share this one with you. They are Whangaparoa Crowns from New Zealand.

My friend returned to NZ after her husband died last year, and left me with her old seeds. Only one germinated and these all came from that one plant.

She is now about to buy a house in... wait for it.... Whangaparoa District  :D :D

Must be meant to happen  :D :D

I don't know yet.  :) I know the thelma sanders have a different flavour to the potimarrons, but the haul is still maturing on the windowsill.

Sunny those squash look fabulous! Have been wanting to know how they do here as I've bought seeds. On the internet they are compared to crown prince a lot, but with the bonus that these are open pollinated rather than F1 so you can save seeds easily. Have you eaten any of them?

Beautiful squashes, Surbie and Sunshineband. Mine have been a terrible disappointment this year. Very few and all small. Better than none, I guess, but nowhere near last year's haul and nothing like yours at all. Congratulations!

Surbie I haven't eaten any yet as I always leave squashes through until November before opening one up. I'll let you know what they are like.

I shall be saving seeds if they are scrummy  :nowink:

Stashed away in the spare bedroom I also have Turks Turbans, Thelma Sanders and butternuts too  :D :D Been a pretty good year here for squashes all round  :D :D
