Autumn Crown Squash Harvest
« on: October 12, 2014, 18:55 »
Hi All,

I sowed 5 seeds of Autumn Crown Squash earlier this season and planted them out early June.
2 of the 5 plants had a poor start and never really recovered. We had a poor August weather wise but a great September.  I fed all the plants on Phostrogen up until a  month ago when I couldn't get to them because the foliage was so dense, we've had a few cold nights recently so I thought I'd better get them indoors.

This is my Harvest from five plants! The flesh is a lemon colour inside and we are cooking one as I type so hoping they are nice.

99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

That looks like a pretty decent crop = well done.
Might give that variety a roll next year myself...

Cheers,
Balders

They are a cross between Butternut & Crown Prince.
I could never get Butternut to maturity in our climate and Crown Prince were great in taste and harvest but the fruit are around 10lb each so I  thought I'd try AC to see if they are a compromise between CP & B/nut.

Will post about the all important taste when we have tried a few.

Thanks, I agree, isn't nature brilliant.

One thing I would like to add is that I have been adding Compost out of my bin & Manure to my soil each year & I'm noticing that the health & vigour of my crops is improving. I also use Phostrogen to give my plants a boost and this really helps as well.

I built a lasagne bed last year & this, then planted through weed suppressant membrane, with a bottomless 2 litre bottle planted at the side of each plant to water through. I fed once with the dregs of my comfrey barrel. Worked very well, see my diary or the pumpkin competition.

This surprised me, what part of Cheshire are you in? I've had no problem the last couple of years in Wilmslow.

Those Autumn Crown look great Lardman. They should store well and their flavour will mature as they get older too  :nowink:

Had them 3 times now, once in a Curry, one in a stew & the 3rd time Roasted as a Veg accompaniment.
'Hidden' in a Stew or Curry they were good, but the taste on their own is not as good as either Crown Prince or Butternuts.

But that said they are prolific and they look like they will store well. I will be growing them next year & supplement them with a few Crown Prince for the times when we want squash as a on its own Veg.

Overall 7/10 & if they store past Christmas (which Crown Prince do easily) they will be getting a 8/10.

An update on these Squashes.

They are best in a stew, they make the stew quite thick and glutinous because they 'melt down' quickly.

By themselves as a Veg the taste isn't good as Crown Prince or Butternut squash and they don't taste that great roasted, but in a stew they are great.

So far they are all storing okay with only one showing signs of rot. But I cut out the bad on that one and stewed the rest and it was fine.

In my previous post I gave them 7/10, I would now give them 7.5/10  and will definitely be growing them next season.
