Kohl Rabbi,

Lovely looking plant, but never really found a culinary use for it that couldn't be done better with a different vegetable. Still got a row full so I'm wondering if my friends rabbits will like it.

As per a previous thread, if you're expecting garlic, don't grow Elephant Garlic.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I too wouldn't bother with asparagus pea again - very pretty flowers but so little to actually eat it's hard to say whether the flavour is good, bad or indifferent!

A lot of other crops I don't grow either because I have neither the space nor suitable soil (all brassicas except radish) or because for me they didn't grow very well and I didn't particularly like them anyway (salsify springs to mind.)

Some things I'm desperate to grow successfully but should probably give up on - Florence Fennel tops that list!  :nowink:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Asparagus pea, elephant garlic, creeping buttercup, celery (can't do celery), aubergine (ditto), cape gooseberry (well, not in the GH... triffid-like)

Cheers,
Balders

Sweet mini peppers 'snackbite'- got some this year as meant to be great grown on the patio etc
Just got the first one ripe today
described as heavy cropping with 25-30 fruits per plant
more like 4-9 and only 1 per plant ripe so far.......

shame- they are something I love from the supermarket!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

celery - far too much faffing about and I don't like the taste very much - apart from in casseroles

Peas - apart from one row to eat while standing on the plot which is just wonderful.  Otherwise, too much podding - they won't wait for you - you have to pick them when perfect and they take ages to pod to freeze.

Runners - think I prefer the taste of french beans...

celeriac - love the stuff but can't get it to grow.

I'm with you ptarmigan as far as runners are concerned. I don't like them at all and Plotfather agrees that French beans are much tastier. So, next year we will be planting more french beans and no runners.

Asparagus Pea - had to pick so small as to be tedious, and so dwarf that it gave me backache
Salisfy - grow parsnips, far better yield-per-area
Sconzonera
Mini Corn - nightmare to pick at the right time (cobs obscured and impossible to guess their size). Supermarket had better taste
Celery - never managed to get a proper crop of self-blanching. Also doesn't fit my "Grow what you like to eat" mantra!

Dwarf anything - backache stooping to pick them - e.g. French Beans (I grow climbing French instead although I still grow a few Dwarf for earliest season picking), The Sutton (Broadbean)

Sweet Peppers & Aubergines - I grow them, but the yield is dreadful

Runners - think I prefer the taste of french beans...

We prefer French too, we grow both the tubular Haricot type, but we also like "flat beans" which are shaped like Runners and taste / texture like French.  e.g. the variety Limka (climbing) or Masterpiece (Dwarf).  Borlotti beans (picked before the beans fatten) taste much the same.

Kohl Rabbi

On its own I agree, but we like it raw mixed with (cooked, and cooled) Beetroot, all diced together with Greek yogurt as a cold salad

melons. I managed to grow one once, but would not bother again.
The crop to grow, if your conditions are right for it, is sweet corn.
I counted the seeds on a cob and found 650. That's 65000% return on your investment if you only get one cob per plant!

So far, tomatillos and cape gooseberries - I have both outside and while they are huge plants, dripping with fruits, neither are showing any signs of getting ripe. They have been growing since Feb/Mar so that's a hell of a long wait.

I am not entirely sure whether this is down to me or the plant. Probably the former.

Definitely with you on the asparagus pea. Also really, really dislike chard.

I think aubs are worth growing, even if the yield is poor, they are beautiful plants.

Not grown them, but heard other people saying they would not bother growing again:

Cucamelon

and what about Tomtato - anyone grown that, and would you grow it again?

Tomatoes - far too much effort for the results. I've a large plot and enough work to do without slaving over one crop in particular.
