spring onions - is this a record?
« on: July 29, 2014, 15:21 »
I've never been really successful with spring onions. This year I sowed some seed into my planter trough and the onions slowly came up. They are still there and slooowly growing and I'm waiting for them to fill out a bit more. They are about pencil size and a few with a small bulb end, but not really any decent size.

They have been in for nearly 4 months! Is this normal?? Do I leave them a while longer?

They can be slow  ::)

If you want them earlier then sow some of the winter hardy spring onions  :)

Spring onions give off the vibes and have the appearance of being both quick and easy to grow.... they're not.
Its quicker to eat leek/normal onion seedlings ..... or oak trees. :D

Nowhere near a record - the last time I sowed White Lisbon in spring I finally ate them early in the summer of the following year!   :ohmy:

(I kind of forgot about them after they'd germinated rather patchily, and nothing grows either fast or well in my soil without a bit of help, which usually means fertiliser. It seems to confirm they overwinter quite well though, if that helps!  :unsure:  :lol:)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

They are slow aren't they!

Our first lot were sown in an ordinary seed tray, and bounded away, but the later sowings are taking their time, and they're in modules.

Cadalot uses comfrey feed.... maybe you could try that, as it seems to work for him alright  :D :D

I think I should add them to the 'what not to plant' list. :dry:
They take ages to grow, don't get many and are eaten in one meal. Better to buy from market as I have not noticed any taste benefit in home grown spring onions.

I do prefer home grown ones tbh, and you have the choice of several sorts, including red or mauve ones too  :nowink:

We have had some very powerful and chunky spring onions, with more taste than those bought from the supermarket. The last lot I built up the soil to blanch the ends whiter and have had some very leak looking spring onions as a result see below
