In true Dragon's Den style....

I'm out.

Tallest one only reached about 6 foot.

No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.

I have a question about bees and sunflowers. Normally bees flit from flower to flower but with my sunflowers it seems to be different. The bees seem to land on the sunflower and then stay there for ages - has anyone else noticed this.

Yes, I have. After watching the recent programmes on bee behaviour I was rather surprised, but I suppose sunflower heads are so large there are different rules for the bees. Whatever the reason, they and the birds are loving our forest of twelve foot multi headed sunflowers. I feel more honey coming on for the winter. :D

That's because the flower head actually consists of multiple flowers if you look closely, and each produces an insane amount of nectar as well as pollen - bee heaven  8)

We are in the middle of commercial sunflower country and the honey from our hive is absolutely delicious...and that is not being biased! The ones in the fields have now gone over well and truly but our multi headers are keeping them happy for now.

If anything is going to get the bees supping up, it's sunflowers, it's always been thus.
The other flowers that get them "drunk" are the big blue artichoke flowers. In fact I grow a few globe artichokes purely for that reason. It's all too much for them and they tend to doze off awhile. :D

Thank you BabbyAnn and Beesrus - I have just caught up with your comments as I am on holiday. Apparently all of my sunflowers but one have collapsed in the high winds at home. So not so much pollen for the bees.  :(

Hi all,

This has turned out to be our tallest sunflower. On the photo is my daughter standing on my shoulders. I am 1.86m tall and my daughter is about 1.20m. The exact measurement of the sunflower came to 2.93 meter.

Is this sufficient proof for exact size and what is the tallest so far?

All the best,
Maarten
