Strawberries
« on: May 20, 2013, 18:15 »
Apologies if already posted, but  couldn't find anything.

Just inherited another half plot and was planning on planting some strawberries.  Which is the most favoured variety of posters here?  I know there’s going to be little crop this year, but planning for next season now.  Thanks in advance.

I planted Honeoye ,, I think they are mid season .

They haven't been effected to much by disease , and produced loads of large sized fruit.(2nd year)

They also throw out lots of runners,

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Hi Armleywhite - There are hundreds of varieties and you will get loads of different favourites from people.. Hope you can sort out your favourite to plant.

P.S. I have "Neighbours Specials" available on most allotments sites ..... as long as they are sweet and grow well they will do. Then get a few types and hopefully you can get a longer fruiting period.

Mine are inherited, but whoever put them in thought about having strawberries all season long!  :)
Do some of your neighbours have spares? Nearly everyone on our site was wandering around with an armful or two of spare runners this year!  :D

I know it's a bit off topic, but I was surprised how many runners one strawberry plant could put out!!!  Mine were first year plants so I dutifully cut (most) of them off... hoping to increase my strawberry population this year!!

Have to confess though I did buy some additional plants this year from B&Q, they were Elstama (or something similar sounding) I can't vouch for the quality of the fruit but at 50% off (via their club members offer) wasn't bad making it just £3 for 6 plants.

p.s. it's a tray of individual pots so I got quite a few off the shelf so I made sure I got 6 of the best looking plants ;)

Hannah :D

I plant a mixture of June-bearers and everbearers. The June bearers will (hopefully!) give me a glut to make into useful things like jam/cordial etc, and the everbearers crop more thinly but are nice to pick off throughout the summer while I'm working on the plot! My June bearers include Honeyoe, Cambridge Favourite, Sonata and a few others, and for my everbearer I've gone for Mara des Bois - delicious!

I love 'Honeoye' - absolute favourite :D  and 'Elsanta'.
Also have 'Symphony', 'Cambridge Favourite' and 'Florence' - I think!

All sweet and delicious and varying fruiting times.

Just to add to the confusion you will find that peoples taste buds all vary and so do growing conditions - so Elsanta grown in my plot will be different to your plot..
