Have you thought of putting their house on the base? My houses are all on a concrete base and I have put netting up from the ground and attached to the sheds to deter rats from getting in.  I hate rats   but so far this is working.

yes had thought of that too, arggghh rats are the worst, we had them in the garden last year when we moved in! what about their run though, should we dig the rest of the conrete up, or put soil and chippings down?

If it were me I'd prob put bark on top of concrete easy to clean up if need be, but someone will prob come along soon with a solution for you :)

Surely the house should be on the concrete to stop rats. They will come when there is feed around  , but they can't dig under concrete. Of course, the hens will only be in the accomodation when it is dark, because you will let them out in the day, won't you? :D  No access to food = no rats!

I put netting up the side's of the houses and down to the concrete to stop the rats from nibbling the wood and getting in the houses that way  :)

I would put the house on the concrete, when they are out they will very quickly scratch the earth into a mud bath if the weather is bad, can you rotate the area that they will be on during the day so that you can rest some areas? If not then wood bark is a very good idea, we have ours free range but I use wood bark where their feeder is to stop the ground getting too gluey there.
good luck :D  :D
